Overtime On A Saturday

June 9, 2007 · Leave a Comment

dwight

I’ve been back at the office since 7:30 am. Putting in some weekend overtime at the cubicle farm, and as you can see blogging. I like my job so it doesn’t feel too much like work, and overtime money is good. (I like money)

I’m writing NOFs  (Notice Of Findings) to attorneys all morning. Apparently I’m good at it. Who knows I just might take those LSATs after all.

Thirst

From time to time I do consulting work for a non-profit called Media Tank. They are a media advocacy organization and very smart people. I’ll be attending and perhaps volunteering tomorrow at a film screening they are hosting. Here’s the info:

THIRST
Screening and Discussion
Thursday, June 7th at 7:00 pm
The Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street
FREE and open to the public!
Refreshments at 6:30 pm

Featuring Victoria Kaplan of Food & Water Watch and Paul & Joyce Marin
from Emmaus For Locally Owned Water (EFLOW)

Many have predicted that the next world wars will not be fought over
oil but over control of water, the basis of all life.

Water has typically been considered a public resource with the
recognition that it is vital to sustaining life. Now governments around
the world are being pressured to hand water rights over to
transnational corporations for private profit.

Largely ignored by the mainstream media, there has been little public
awareness or debate about the world’s water situation and the stark
realities facing many around the globe. This film explores the issues
and what happens when you put a price tag on this precious resource.

  • Should all people have a right to water, which is necessary to live?
  • What happens to people who can’t afford to pay?
  • Should outside interests be able to access a community’s water source and sell it back to the people who live there?

Media Tank’s MediaEnvironment project seeks to draw attention to the
relationship between media and environmental issues and examine the
media’s role in addressing key issues of human and environmental
sustainability.

Second Week On The Job

May 22, 2007 · Leave a Comment

This is the second week on the job and it’s not bad. I’m doing alot of studying and review to cover the learning curve, but the work is interesting.

I’ve been really busy getting situated and haven’t had time to post. Good to be working though. And looking forward to moving into my new apartment in the next month. If you have even one good friend, consider yourself lucky.

Blogging At Work

I’ve started blogging at work, and it feels a little rushed. I’m hiding in my little cubicle. But I like that it forces me to just post something when it comes to me. I was reading Guy Kawasaki’s blog, How To Change The World, and he has a 10 question interview with Penelope Trunk, The Brazen Careerist. These are two of my favorite bloggers (check my blog roll) so I get two for the price of one.

It’s a great concise interview and touches on some good career related
advice. I especially like the following questions:

-Question #1: How much money does it take to be happy?

-Question #5: Is being a generalist or a specialist the path to the executive suite?

-Question #9: How should I prepare for an interview?

“You’re Hired”

No, this is not a posting for Donald Trump’s The Apprentice, on NBC. I got offered a position today, and start on this coming Tuesday. “We’d like to offer you the position,” has got to be the sweetest seven words any job hunter can hear.

Perhaps This Is Progress

work in progress

I have not posted in a few days. Things have been hectic to say the least. As you know, April was my last month at my apartment. So I have been busy packing, getting my stuff into storage, as well as getting a job. Well the good news is that my stuff is packed….lol.

I’m storing my stuff in a friend’s basement and couch surfing for a few weeks. Yes, this is the glamorous life of an Accidental Slacker. Kids don’t try this at home…lol.

As far as the job hunting, I’ve had a few promising interviews. I’ve also registered with a few staffing agencies. So it’s wait for call back time. On a promising note I interviewed with www.integritystaffing.com yesterday, and they has scheduled me for an interview with www.exceedcorporation.com this Thursday. It’s a an analyst job and the pay is pretty good. If this works out well I should be able to move back into an apartment in center city by June.

So I’m going to do my homework and even cross my fingers. Wish me luck!

The Waiting Game

April 24, 2007 · Leave a Comment

waiting

Waiting has got to be the worst part of job hunting. I’ve sent my resume out, friends have sent my resume out, now I have to wait for responses. Then there is the follow up calls and emails. I’ve had a few interviews, which went well. I’ll be doing more posting on job sites tomorrow. I’ve been swamped with details for moving all week. The pressure is definitely building.

I’m keeping a positive outlook and revising my game plan. I read somewhere that the harder you work the luckier you get.

Following The Leads

April 17, 2007 · Leave a Comment

I think that most people get their jobs via referrals from people they know. I’m sure you may have also read that in some career advice article.  This is especially true for Philadelphia.

That being the case, I spent most of the day following up job leads that were sent to me by my personal network of friends and associates.  One such friend is a Case Manager for the Philadelphia Workforce Development Corporation, and has been sending my resume to various companies with job openings.

I’ve also been on the jobcircle.com site all day. Happy hunting:)
